Wallpaper And Borders Biography
Wallpaper borders are long strips of paper (sometimes cloth) that are used in interior decorating to accent the edges of walls.1 They date as far back as the 17th century.2 In the beginning, wallpaper borders mimicked intricate and costly architectural details such as hand-carved moulding. Likewise, the patterns on the borders had the ability to give the appearance of luxurious natural surfaces such as stone, velvet or marble.2 This allowed a person to decorate in the lavish style of the day without incurring the substantial expense of the real thing.
Today, some borders are still used to emulate natural materials, but they have expanded to include different graphical styles and motifs as well. Some of the common motifs sold today are miniature murals, geometric patterns, children's motifs, floral, country, animal print, western, astronomical and sport.3 Some stores carry borders that include religious and inspirational quotes. Seasonal and holiday borders are also available.3
Pre-pasted and un-pasted papers are the main types of wallpaper borders on the market. Un-pasted borders need additional paste placed on them so that they can adhere to the surface of the wall.4 Pre-pasted borders come to the user with adhesive already applied to the back of it.5 This modern process makes the border application cleaner and simpler.5
Some decorating retailers sale a new type of border called paintable wallpaper borders.6 These borders are pure white and ready to be customized with paint. Generally, they have raised architectural designs with traditional motifs.
